After a valiant battle with cancer of almost five years, Carole Girard passed away peacefully on Friday, March 3, 2023, at the age of 75.
Beloved wife of Wayne Girard and mother of Tim and Anne. Cherished grandmother of Carolyn, Eleanor and Lillian. She will be dearly missed by family, relatives and friends. Predeceased by her father Leo Collins of Peterborough, mother Kay Coughlin of Douro, and brothers Michael, James and Grant.
Carole cherished her Irish roots and greatly enjoyed the fun that was had at Celtic gatherings and celebrations in Peterborough, Douro and Ottawa. She liked to prepare special meals to celebrate festive occasions. With her keen interest in current events, and a good sense of humour, she was an engaging conversationalist.
Carole was an avid gardener, and she and Wayne liked to collect attractive rocks for her flower beds. She was a fan of most sports, especially track and field at which she excelled in her school years. She enjoyed the outdoors, brisk walks, cycling, and excelled at bowling.
Carole had a deep compassion for the less fortunate in society and was a longtime volunteer at the Shepherds of Good Hope soup kitchen. She was one of the very first volunteers when it started in 1983 in the basement of St. Brigid’s Church. She greatly enjoyed the camaraderie that existed among the volunteers.
The family wishes to thank the dedicated doctors, nurses and volunteers who provided such great care for Carole. A special thanks to nurse Diane of SE Health, and to the staff and visiting doctors at the May Court Hospice.
In keeping with Carole’s wishes, a private family gathering has been planned. Condolences or tributes may be shared at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home. Memorial donations in Carole’s memory may be made to May Court Hospice or Shepherds of Good Hope.
