Allen Duff Mitchell

Allen Duff Mitchell, of Ottawa, Ontario, died after a short illness on Monday, August 31, 2020 at the Waterford Retirement Living Residence. He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife Marion; children Duff (Heather), Barbara, Margaret (David), and Tony (Rachel); six grandchildren Fiona, Bryce, Julie (Dorian), Michael, Alison, and Summer; and two great-grandchildren Maia and Leona. He will also be dearly mourned by his sister Jean Dykeman of Jemseg, New Brunswick. He was pre-deceased by his son-in-law Graham and brother-in-law Dick. Allen was born on July 17, 1930 in Lancaster (Saint John), New Brunswick. He attended the University of New Brunswick where he obtained his BA (1951) and BCL (1953) and was a competitive badminton player and debater. Later, he completed the LLM Programme in Constitutional Law (1967) at the London School of Economics. In 1952 he married the love of his life Marion Orlik. Allen was a dedicated Canadian military legal officer. Over his 40-year career, he enjoyed various legal appointments across Canada as well as abroad. His 11 years overseas included the Canadian Brigade Units Europe (Soest, 1963-1966; Lahr, 1980-1985) and the Office of the United Kingdom Judge Advocate General (London, 1966-1967). In 1990, Allen retired with the rank of Colonel after serving as Deputy Judge Advocate General. In 2012, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Allen was passionate about his church (Church of the Resurrection, Ottawa), golf and wine. He was very proud of his New Brunswick roots, and throughout his military service always maintained Saint John as his deemed residence. He and Marion enjoyed foreign travel and collecting art.
