Michael Patrick O'Reilly

Michael “ Mike” Patrick O’Reilly peacefully passed on March 31,2021, at Halifax Health Hospice of Port Orange listening to his Irish music.

He arrived at Heaven’s Gate just in time to enjoy the celebration of the Resurrection of Christ (Easter) and to join the love of his life, Therese Mae O’Reilly. It is fitting that he went to be with the Lord at this special time, as it was always a special celebration in the O’Reilly household.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated in his honor on Friday, April 9, 2021, at 11.00 a.m. at Saint Brendan’s’ Catholic Church. A Catered Reception and Gathering of Friends and Family will follow at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, 548 N. Nova Road, Ormond Beach, FL.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, James Joseph and Mae O'Reilly; his wife, Therese O’Reilly; his brother, James (Jim) O’Reilly; and his son-in-law, Rick Costanza. He is survived by his brother, Frank O'Reilly (Alice); seven children, Cheryl Nagengast (Allan), Michael O’Reilly, Kathleen Widick (Ray), Therese “Terri” Costanza, Maureen Smith (George), Margaret “Peggy” Davis (Randy), Eileen Long (Charlie). He claims Laura Porter Bolduc (Ric) as one of his own, his eight Grandchildren: Nancy Droker, Trisha Vanacore, Steve Nagengast, John Nagengast, Caitlin Costanza, Garrett Costanza, Jenna Davis, Sean Davis, and thirteen great grandchildren.

His Legacy:

Born in Chicago, IL, on March 21,1934, and graduating from Mount Carmel High School he continued to live and work in Chicago until he moved to Daytona Beach, FL in 1958. Michael was an Irishman through and through, he was high-spirited, opinionated, and good-humored. He married his high-school sweetheart, Therese, on January 16, 1954. Therese was captivated by Michael’s intelligence, gregarious personality, subtle charm, and his Irish spirit. Michael was captivated by her beauty, warm-giving heart, sense of humor, and most of all for the love she held for him.

In 1958 with three children in tow, Michael and Therese moved from Chicago, IL, to Daytona Beach FL. He transferred with Eastern Airlines to continue in his dream job that he held for 38 years. Michael spent his entire career with Eastern. He was a loyal supporter of the airlines and was one of the last men standing when they folded in 1991. He worked tirelessly to provide for his family, often taking on side jobs. With an armor of protection, a constant voice of purpose, and complete dedication, he was a father to a clan of seven and the many others who liked to call him Dad and Grandpa. It was immensely important to him for his children to get what he called a “good” Catholic education. There was nothing more important to Mike than his role as a spouse, brother, uncle, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He cherished his family and he loved spending time with them. He is absolutely adored by his children, their children, and the next generation. His joyful spirit lives on through them.

Michael’s sense of humor brightened the lives of any-and-all who knew him. He was famous for having a good time! He was a devout Catholic, a lover of old Western movies, and so much so, as to nickname himself “The Duke”. He was an avid fan of “Da Bears”, Chicago Cubs and Blackhawks. He was a passionate Republican. He watched FOX News every chance he got. He was especially partial to Bill O’Reilly, Hannity, and Rush Limbaugh. He encouraged all around him to listen and learn. He always made himself available to lend a hand, speak a word of encouragement, provide financial support, and at a drop of a hat always ready for the next adventure. This warmhearted, reliable, selfless, trustworthy man is remembered with a smile by all who were blessed to know him in this life. A wondrous man, whose influence is forever eternal.

When asked for a parting word, Mike would often quote this Irish Blessing;

“May your glass be ever full.

May the roof over your head be always strong.

And may you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you’re dead.”

The family wishes to acknowledge and thank Halifax Health Hospice for their compassionate care in his final days.

In his giving spirit and in lieu of flowers, contributions to Halifax Health Hospice, 3800 Woodbriar Trl, Port Orange, FL 32129 will be gratefully accepted in his memory, Michael P. O’Reilly.
