Joan H. Compton, a resident of Flagler Beach, FL, passed away on August 8, 2022. Joan, the third daughter of the late Fred C. Herold and Martha (Dodds) Herold Stuby, was born in Butler, PA, on November 26, 1929. Shortly after graduating from high school, she moved to Arlington, VA, to accept a position with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, DC. Soon thereafter she met and married her husband and they settled in the Northern Virginia area where they raised their three daughters. In 1985, they relocated to Jacksonville, FL, where Joan accepted a Computer Specialist position at the Naval Air Station. Upon her retirement in 1994, she and her husband settled in Flagler Beach. She loved her family and she valued her many friendships. She always found great joy in helping others. Joan loved living by the ocean and her early morning walks. She had a passion for traveling. She always described herself as an ordinary person who had been blessed with many extraordinary experiences during her lifetime resulting in a life that was immeasurably rich. She left her mark on many and her presence will be deeply missed. Smitty Compton, her beloved husband of 59 years, passed away in October 2008. Joan was also preceded in death by her two sisters, Annabelle Fleming and Bertha Rettig, her brother, Frank Herold, sons-in-law, Larry Birkett and Kenneth Black and daughter-in-law, Linda Gallagher. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother she is survived by three daughters; Virginia (Ginny) Birkett and Linda Tilley of Ormond Beach and Flagler Beach, Debra (Debbie) Black of Midlothian, TX; a son who she was like a mother to, Patrick Gallagher of Fredericksburg, VA; six grandchildren, Nathan McDonald, Shawna Miller (husband Michael), Gabriel Tilley, Jodie Lavoie (husband Chris), Kenneth Black and Nicholas Black (wife Kimmi); six great grandchildren; Kayla Marie Miller, Landon Christopher Lavoie, Casler Lane Black, Randall Smith Lavoie, Maxwell Smith McDonald and Skylar Joan Lavoie; a brother, Fred C. Herold (wife Gail) and one sister, Mary A. Herold, as well as other extended relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 16 at 1:00 pm with a reception to follow in the Oceanside Room of Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, 548 North Nova Road, Ormond Beach, FL with Pastor Nate Bendorf officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Grace Lutheran Church, 338 Ocean Shore Boulevard, Ormond Beach, FL 32176 or a charity of your choice. A private interment will be held at the Jacksonville National Cemetery, Jacksonville, FL, at a later date.
