Phyllis M. (Brown) Moran, a longtime resident of Eastham, MA and Jensen Beach, FL passed away on April 24, 2016 at the age of 86. Phyllis was the loving wife of Dr. James “Jim” P. Moran. Phyllis was pre-deceased by her parents Frank A. Brown, Jr. and Mary R. Brown, and sisters Evelyn Cady and Dorothy Crow.
Phyllis was born in Berkley, MA and graduated from Taunton High School in 1947. She graduated from Morton Hospital School of Nursing and did post graduate studies in Obstetrics/Gynecology at Boston Lying In Hospital. Later she completed her B.S. at Empire State College and pursued Graduate studies in Health Education at Russell Sage College in Troy, NY. Her nursing career encompassed a broad range of experiences in Massachusetts, Washington State and New York. Prior to retirement she was Nurse Health Educator at several Senior Service Centers located in Albany County, NY.
Phyllis married Jim on September 24, 1955 and their daughter Joyce Mary was born in Germany where they were living at the time. While Nursing was an important part of her life, family was more important. She was a devoted mother who encouraged and taught by example. She was active as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader ever developing projects for the benefit of her daughter’s troop that broadened their horizons and skills, and involved them in community action. An avid camper with the girl scouts and her family, she traveled and camped throughout the 50 states.
In retirement, Phyllis couldn’t sit still. She attended Clown College while wintering in Florida as well as organizing Health Fairs and Health screenings. While at home in Eastham, she was active with the St. Joan of Arc Thrift Shop in Orleans for over 20 years.
Phyllis is survived by her husband Jim; daughter Joyce M. Moran of Chapin, SC and her grandchildren Megan Flannery, Erin F. Ellis, Katie Flannery, Jackie Flannery, Angel Flannery, Stacey Rostek and her husband Michael, David J. Flannery and Marissa Flannery of South Carolina; her sister Alice Rogala and her husband Michael of Hartford, CT; her brothers in law Dr. Joseph F. Moran, Jr. of Eastham, Dr. Robert F. Moran and his wife Marianne of Methuen, MA, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 26th from 4—6 PM, at Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans, MA 02653. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, April 27th at 10 AM, at St. Joan of Arc Church, 61 Canal Road, Orleans, MA 02653. A burial at Massachusetts National Cemetery will follow.
