Laurence Kent Hayward (Larry), age 77, of Orleans, MA, died October 8, 2022, at Cape Cod Hospital. In the weeks preceding and at the time of his passing, Larry was surrounded by loved ones. He fought a long battle with a rare autoimmune disease with uncommon grace and courage. He was the loving husband of Jeanne Hayward for 54 years, the caring father of three children, and the proud grandpa of three granddaughters.
Larry grew up in Brockton, MA. He received an Associate Degree in Chemistry from Benjamin Franklin Institute, a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Northeastern University, and an M.B.A. from Bryant College. He served in the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant/First Lieutenant/ Company Commander at Fort Dix, N.J.
Following his army service, Larry entered the business world, beginning in sales with Paul Revere & Company, then as director of sales and marketing for Pfizer Inc.’s MPM Division, and lastly with Ametek where he transitioned into operations as a Vice President/General Manager. He traveled domestically and internationally for work and pleasure and absorbed with much delight the people he met, the varied cultures, and the good food and wine.
Following his retirement, Larry and his wife Jeanne settled on Cape Cod. He took full advantage of many opportunities to volunteer. He helped build houses at Habitat for Humanity until his health precluded it; he served as a member and then Chair of the Orleans Finance Committee; he served as President of Nauset Newcomers; and he served as Rear Commodore, Vice Commodore, and Commodore of the Orleans Yacht Club. He was active in a local investment club, a couple’s book group, a wine-tasting group, and the Orleans Coffee Club where he was a former Chair. He was a car enthusiast and handyman. Wherever Larry lived, he planted a garden, and he delighted in sharing its bounty with family and friends.
Larry was a man of his word - thoughtful, honest, and wise - a rock upon which his family could always depend. He leaves us with an extraordinary example for living an authentic life.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne; his son Laurence K. Hayward II, (wife Kara) and two granddaughters, Katherine and Lauren of Chicago; his son Christopher J. Hayward (wife Stephanie) also of Chicago; his daughter Jennifer L. Hayward, granddaughter Anya, Anya’s dad Gregory Pakhladzhyan and Jennifer’s partner Brian Lawlor of Boston, MA. He also is survived by his brother Everett Hayward, Jr., (wife Susan) of Milton, MA., his sister Karen Chubbuck of W. Bridgewater, MA., and several nieces and nephews (Justin, Jillian, Michelle, and Bill). He was the son of the late Everett and Shirley (Eldridge) Hayward.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
In memory of Larry, donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity, Lower Cape Outreach, or a charity of your choice.
