Helena was born in Dombrowa, Poland, on September 27, 1943, to John and Francis Sojka. In 1950 she immigrated with her family to the United States and settled in Rehoboth, MA. She attended Attleboro High School and then later graduated from the Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School. On July 16, 1965 in Pittsburg, PA, Helene married Alan Hall of Fall River MA, and lived in Turnersville, NJ, Cazenovia, NY, and Media, PA, before coming to reside in Brewster, MA in 2000.
Helene was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She kept a lovely home and was a gifted hostess and caregiver. Writing notes and giving thoughtful gifts were among the special ways she showed her love for others.
Artistic by nature, Helene enjoyed many creative activities throughout her life. As a young girl, she learned to cook, sew and made her own clothes. Later she enjoyed painting, drawing, and needlework. Most recently she spent time lovingly tending her garden and writing about her childhood memories of Poland and coming to America. Helene also loved God’s creation, especially the ocean, and enjoyed beach-combing shores near and far.
Active in her community, Helene was involved with many Cape organizations including: The Polish Society of Cape Cod and the Islands (former president), Christian Women’s Club of Cape Cod (former president), Nauset Garden Club, Eastham Hiking Club and the Cape Cod Hospital Auxiliary. Helene worshiped at the Cape Cod Bible Alliance Church in Brewster.
Helene was a faithful Christian until her last moments when her faith became complete. She often quoted Joshua 1:9 during her struggle with cancer: “…Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you where ever you go.” Today her family celebrates Helene’s joy in the Presence of the Lord she so faithfully served.
Helene is survived by her husband of 46 years, Alan Hall of Brewster, MA; a daughter Lisa and her husband Christopher Westrate of Amesbury, MA; a daughter Lindsay and her husband Matt McGowen of West Chester, PA, as well as her two grandchildren, Anna and Jacob Westrate. She is also survived by her father, John Sojka, of Rehoboth, MA and brothers John Sojka, Jr., of Taunton, MA and A. Frank Sojka of Attleboro, MA. Helene also leaves behind her cousin, Lidia Maruszewka Dow of Del Rio, TX, who was like a daughter to her.
