Benito Ortiz, age 88, was born on March 21, 1936, in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, and peacefully entered eternal rest on December 3, 2024, in Chicago, Illinois, surrounded by his loving family.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mirta Ortiz; his son, Oscar; his mother, Herminia Pagan; and his father, Segundo Ortiz.
Benito's brothers and sisters Antonio, Roberto, Aida, Carmen, Milagros, Cecilia, and Teresa. Benito graduated from Vega Baja High School and enlisted in the United States Army in 1956, proudly serving his country while stationed in St. Louis, Missouri. After completing his service in 1959, he relocated to Chicago, Illinois. It was there that he met and married Mirta Ortiz, the love of his life, with whom he shared a devoted and loving marriage. Together, they raised two sons, Edward and Oscar.
Under the GI Bill, Benito earned a commercial refrigeration license, which led to a successful career as a Refrigeration Tradesman. Known for his hard work and dedication, Benito retired alongside Mirta in 1998, and the couple moved to Orlando, Florida, to enjoy their golden years together.
Beno was a man of kindness, compassion, and unwavering generosity. He touched countless lives with his gentle heart, warm smile, and willingness to help anyone in need. A devoted brother, uncle, godfather, and cherished friend, he was deeply loved by all who knew him.
As a man of faith, Benito was an active and dedicated parishioner at Our Lady of Grace Church in Chicago and St. Isaac Jogues in Orlando. He eagerly supported his church in any way he could, serving his community with humility and devotion. Benito also enjoyed his time at Casa Central, where he spent time with his friends, whom he made smile and laugh.
A proud veteran, Benito valued his visits to the Veterans Administration (VA) and cherished connecting with fellow veterans. In his leisure, he loved listening to the nostalgic music of his youth on his cassette player, playing the guitar, and reading the Bible every night.
Benito is survived by his son Edward (wife, Mary) and Oscar’s wife, Sabina. His grandchildren also survive him: Melissa, Tino (wife, Danielle), Gio (wife, Aileen), Alex, Matt, Daniel, and Gabriel. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, Katrina, Mauricio, Alexis, Nathan, Xavier, Gio, Gianna, Giasella, Geno, Jericho, his great-great-grandchild, Messiah, and grand puppies Rogue and Kiki.
Benito “Beno” Ortiz will be remembered for his loving spirit, gentle nature, and the immense joy he brought to all who knew him. His life was a testament to kindness, faith, and love, and he will be dearly missed.
