Heaven gained another good Marine to guard the pearly gates when Albert Tarter, 93, passed quietly from this world on April 13th. Al was born in the small coal-mining town of Mary D, PA on June 8, 1929.
It was a hardscrabble life through the Great Depression, and, at the age of 17, he joined the Marines. He served 21 years in the Corps, achieving the rank of First Sergeant. His service included China and the Korean War where he was wounded multiple times, and was a USMC Drill Instructor in both Camp Pendleton and Parris Island.
He met the love of his life, June Frisch, at a USO dance in Brooklyn in 1949.They were married March 20, 1951 after his return from Korea. His family added Mike in 1952 and Laurie in 1956. After living in many different places during his Marine career, including Guam, San Diego CA, Portsmouth NH, Rota, Spain, and Camp Lejeune NC, Al retired in August 1968. The family then moved to Orlando, Florida to be in a warm place for June, whose asthma was impacted severely by cold weather. She passed away in 2005.
In June 1971, Al joined Walt Disney World as a locksmith, something he had been certified in years earlier. He was the Architectural Hardware Coordinator for Disney for six of the theme Parks, as well as a supervisor in Key Control. The family became Disney fans, especially June, who loved all things Disney!
Al retired in 1993 but continued as a consultant for many years. Al was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Maria and his brother Bobby. He leaves behind his sister Ida Kutash, his two children, Mike (Jackie), and Laurie Stansell (Jim), five grandchildren – Steven, Christine, Jillian, Haley, Jeremy, a great- granddaughter, Caroline, and a soon-to-be great grandson, Michael and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He moved to Georgia with Laurie and her family in 2018 and lived with them until 2020, when a fall necessitated his move to a senior living home, Mayfield Oaks. His death there was unexpected, but very quick and peaceful, thanks be to God for that. Our many thanks to the folks at Mayfield Oaks for all the care, compassion and love they gave to him. He is not forgotten. Semper Fi!
Interment and a graveside service will be Friday April 21 st at 1:30 at the Chapel Hill Cemetery off Harrell Road in Orlando.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his name to the U.S. Marine Corps
