Virginia was born in Rome City, Indiana, the oldest child of James and Norine Sedgwick. She graduated as valedictorian from Rome City High School in 1950; she then attended Northern Baptist Seminary in Chicago where she met Bruce Bower; they married on June 6, 1953, at the Rome City Baptist Church. The couple moved to Detroit where she obtained a second bachelor’s and a master’s degree in education from Wayne State University. Virginia and Bruce moved to California bringing her sister Sally with her in 1957 and she spent the rest of her life in Los Angeles County. She and Bruce divorced in 1977. She had a lengthy career in education working mostly as an elementary school principal, retiring in 1992 and then went on to educate student teachers at Cal Poly Pomona until 2012. Virginia is survived by two brothers, Robert Sedgwick of Del Mar, California, and George Sedgwick (Karen) of Kendallville, Indiana, a sister Sally Mouw predeceased her. Virginia is also survived by her dedicated nieces and nephews on whose lives she left an indelible mark: Tom Sedgwick (Michael Levine) of Poughkeepsie, NY; Karla Fiffick (David) of Desert Hot Springs, CA; Jim Sedgwick (Jennifer) of Del Mar, CA; Sara Mouw of Fullerton, CA; John Sedgwick (Michelle) of San Diego, CA; Sandra Rainey (Mickey) of Fort Wayne, IN; and Michael Sedgwick (Sarah) of Escondido, CA; and six grand-nieces/nephews and one great grandniece. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that in the spirit of Virginia, you give a gift to someone important in your life.
