ONEONTA – Nancy A. Cleveland, 73, longtime resident of Oneonta, passed away on Monday, September 1, 2014, at her residence after a courageous battle with cancer. The family would like to give special thanks to her caregiver for the past two years, Sue Hoyt. She went above and beyond caring for Nancy with love and dignity.
Nancy was born January 12, 1941 at Parshall Hospital, Oneonta, New York, the daughter of Homer E. Lyon and Agnes O. (Butts) Lyon. She was a graduate of Oneonta High School Class of 1959.
On August 20, 1961, Nancy married Wesley E. Cleveland in Mt. Vision, New York. He passed away on March 25, 2003.
She worked at the family business, Lyon’s Auction Room as the bookkeeper. She worked at various retail stores including J.J. Newberry’s, F.W. Woolworth, Family Bargain Center, White Modell, Barker’s and King’s Department Store. She went to work at the Oneonta Job Corps Academy, spending 24 years working in the Finance Department, retiring in July 2007.
Growing up, Nancy loved roller skating, tap dancing and spending time with her father on the auction truck. Throughout her life she loved playing cards and after retirement spent her Friday nights playing cards with the gang. She had a green thumb and will always be remembered for her abundance of plants and flowers including her beloved peonies that lined her driveway. She spent hours working on her puzzles and always enjoyed company stopping by to add their one piece. She will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her son Terry Cleveland and his wife Michele of Mt. Vision, her daughter Peggy Rowe of Syracuse, NY, step daughter Renee Andrews and her husband Peter of Oneonta, sister and brother-in-law; Dorothy (Lyon) and Richard Wooden of Oneonta, brother-in-law and sister-in-law; Wilber (Daria) Cleveland, brother-in-law, William Schneible, her grandchildren; John Andrews of Utah, Danielle Andrews of Davenport, Katrina Vega of Oneonta, James Cleveland of Newport News, Virginia, Benjamin Cleveland of Mt. Vision and Matthew Rowe of Syracuse; six great grand children and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her brother Homer E. Lyon, Jr., her parents Homer E. Lyon and Agnes O. (Butts) Lyon, her sisters and brother-in-laws Rae Mary (Donald) Phoenix and Dorcas Jane (Allen) Thorn, and a great grandson.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2014 in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 5, 2014 at 11:00 AM in the funeral home with the Reverend Judith A. Thistle officiating. Burial will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.
