Madeline was born November 22, 1928 in Binghamton, the daughter of Wesley Shillington and Dorothy Browning. She married George Shumway on May 2, 1948 in West Oneonta. He predeceased her on October 10, 2000.
Madeline owned and operated Kneedle Kraft Studio in Oneonta for over 15 years. There she shared her talent and love of crafting to many people, creating gifts for many causes such as missions projects and cancer patients.
She dedicated her life to God and was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church. There she sang in the choir for many years and spent time with her church family. They describe her as a beautiful person with a rock solid faith, full of grace and humility. Truly inspiring.
When they were able, George and Madeline enjoyed traveling to places like Europe, Alaska, and destinations out west. She was adored by her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by 3 children, Gail and Keith Valk of Oneonta, Janis and Chris Murray of Eastport, and John and Janet Shumway of Dutton, Montana; daughter in law, Diane Shumway of South Hampton; a sister, Jeri Setaro of Spokane, Washington; grandchildren, Kaleb Valk (Samona), Justin Valk (Stephanie), Erek Shumway (Marina), Meredith Shumway, Wyatt Shumway, David Shumway, Joshua Shumway, Ryan Corwin (Paige), Shelby Corwin, Dakota Murray, and Madison Murray; 12 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was also predeceased by a son, Richard Shumway.
A celebration of life will take place at a later date at the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta.
A private graveside committal took place at the convenience of the family in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Madeline’s memory are asked to be made to the Main Street Baptist Church, 333 Main Street, Oneonta, NY 13820 or the Alzheimer’s Association www.alz.org.
The family would like to acknowledge the exceptional and compassionate care Madeline received while staying in Hampshire House and Chestnut Park. Thank you. We are truly grateful.
