Grace was born on May 26, 1921 to William and Helen (Faber) Van Horn in Jersey City, New Jersey. She was a graduate of Dickinson High School, Class of 1940. After graduation she went to work for Railway Express and continued there after her marriage to James Joseph Sullivan in 1943.
After the war, the couple started a family and raised their four sons primarily in the northeast, first in Saddle Brook and then in Chatham, New Jersey. In later years, they moved to Honesdale, Pennsylvania and finally to East Meredith. Grace was a den mother for Den 10 in Saddle Brook, and after moving to Chatham she taught CCD at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church and was active in the Chatham Women’s Club during the time they successfully fought to save the Great Swamp from the proposed Jetport development. She also held jobs at a bakery and at Overlook Hospital. She was instrumental in helping her husband to construct a home in Honesdale, PA and after retiring she enjoyed travel, quilting and reading, and was a life-long lover of wildlife and the outdoors. And she made the world’s best potato salad.
Grace was predeceased by her beloved husband James in 1990 and is survived by sons Barry (East Meredith, New York), William (Leeds, North Dakota), Dennis (Mount Olive, New Jersey) and James (Kennett Square, Pennsylvania), and their families.
A memorial service for Grace will be held in the Spring.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.bookhoutfh.com for the Sullivan family.
