Born on August 29, 1941, Gordon was the son of the Reverend Russell Lee Plants and Grace Irene (Smith) Plants. Rev. and Mrs. Plants provided spiritual comfort and guidance to Oneontans for 42 years, after two service tours as missionaries in Egypt during the 1930’s.
Gordon is survived by a son, Dr. Nicholas R. Plants; a daughter, Courtney Ann Plants; a former wife, Kathrin Oliva (Henkel) Plants; a daughter in law, Larissa (Nojek) Plants; and God’s gift of a precious granddaughter, Zoe Amelia Plants, all of whom reside in Laurel, Maryland.
He is also survived by 2 sisters, Mary Louise Hendricksen of Mesa, Arizona, and Esther Ruth Brior of Denver, Colorado.
Mr. Plants graduated from Oneonta Senior High School in 1959, received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and finance from Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island in 1962, and a Master’s degree in Public Administration in 1973 from George Washington University in Washington, DC.
Gordon worked for 4 federal agencies in Washington, DC for 20 years, the last of which was the U.S. Export-Import Bank (1972-1981). He then served as Vice President of Operations and Treasurer for two engineering consulting firms in Rockville, Maryland for 10 years.
From 1964 to 1970 Gordon served in the U.S. Army Reserves (the 450th Civil Affairs Company) receiving a commission in the Finance Corps in 1965. The unit’s assignment was the intervention and civil administration of Cuba, after Castro.
During 1976-1977 Gordon worked for the International Sales Division of the General Electric Company as a member of President Jimmy Carter’s Executive Interchange Program.
Per Gordon’s wishes, there will be no service. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family.
