Judith Carolyn Ryan (better known as Judy) a cherished member of her family and church, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2023, at the age of 82. Born in November of 1940 in Omaha, Nebraska, Judy’s life was a testament to her dedication to her family, education, faith communities, and service.
A proud Nebraskan, Judy attended South High School in Omaha, where she began to cultivate her love for learning and community. She furthered her education at the University of Omaha, earning her bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1963. Demonstrating her commitment to lifelong learning, she returned to the same institution (then called UNO) to obtain master's degrees in 1986 (elementary education) and 1998 (school counseling).
Judy’s passion for education was evident in her professional life as well. She served the students of Rosewater, Castelar, Bancroft, and Skinner Elementary Schools, where she not only taught but also left an indelible mark on countless lives.
Her faith in God and her love for her family comprised the cornerstone of Judy’s life. She married Raymond Ryan and to this union were born three children: Raymond, Ronald, and Renee. A longtime member of Wheeler Memorial Presbyterian Church, Judy sang in the choir, taught Sunday and Vacation Bible School, was active in numerous activities, and served on several church boards. In later years, Judy joined Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church where she once again planted deep roots in the faith community. Judy made many dear friends, was a member of the inaugural class of Stephen’s Ministers, worked in youth ministries, and was involved in her Women’s Circle. Prayer was Judy’s constant companion.
Throughout her life, Judy enjoyed a variety of hobbies including sewing, bowling, reading, singing, playing board and card games, rooting for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, and completing puzzles. In her later life, she returned to her love of sewing and started quilting. This passion led Judy to make many quilts; she exhibited some of her beautiful creations and instilled a love of the art form in those around her.
She is survived by her devoted son, Ronald (Julie) Ryan; dedicated son-in-law Ben (Barbara) Lampman; loving brother, Edward Risley; and her cherished grandchildren, Cierra Lampman, Ben Lampman, Ryan Lampman, Sharolyn Lampman, Jacob Ryan, and Daniel Ryan. Her legacy of love and strength will undoubtedly live on through them.
The Ryan family mourns the earlier losses of Judy’s son, Raymond “Bob” Ryan, and daughter, Renee (Ryan) Lampman. She is also predeceased by her parents Irvin S. and Judith (Peterson) Risley, and her brother, Irvin A. Risley. Their memories remain beacons of love and resilience.
The Ryan family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this time. Those wishing to honor Judy’s memory may consider a donation to Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church, a charity of their choice, or by simply keeping her family in their thoughts and prayers.
