Richard James Varney, 69, of Nesbit, MS passed away on October 18, 2023, due to complications of Lymphoma. He was born on November 26, 1953, in North Hollywood, California. He is preceded in death by his father, Hiawatha “Walt” Varney; his mother, Rose May Bensley; his stepmother, Rose Marie Varney. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Kelly Moore Varney; sister, Beverly Philips; daughters, Jacquelina Cox (Elliot Cox), Kayla Varney (Matt Miller); son, David Varney (Kara Varney); niece, April Philips; and grandchildren: Amara, Elias, Ellianna, Vivan, Isla, and Eden.
We honor Richard for his service to his country within the United States Air Force and Air Force Reserves during Vietnam and Desert Storm. Following his military service, Richard pursued his career in air transport as a “freight dawg” on many aircraft including DC-8, DC-10, and B-747, as a heavy engine cargo pilot captain with reputable companies including Zantop, Kalitta, and Emery. He then went on to become an FAA Cargo Safety Inspector where he worked until his retirement in 2020. Richard excelled in his profession as he was an expert in his field and was highly respected by his colleagues. His dedication to his work was evident in his commitment to excellence.
Richard was quite the character, fly-fisherman, Harley Davidson enthusiast, and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. His military ceremonial will be held at the West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery (4000 Forest Hill Irene Rd, Memphis, TN 38125) on November 9, 2023, at 2pm.
