Nelle Fitts Beswick was born September 18, 1906 and passed away November 30, 2011, at the Kennington Pointe Retirement Home in Memphis, Tennessee. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, December 2, at Brantley Funeral Home in Olive Branch. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 3, at Byhalia Cemetery in Byhalia, MS. Mrs. Bewsick was preceded in death by her husband, George Robert Beswick. She is survived by her Goddaughter, Kate Page Korp of Sarasota Florida; nephew, William D. Fitts III and loving niece by marriage Elisabeth K. Fitts who has been so caring in these later years; nephew, Thomas D. Fitts, Jr.; nieces, Betsy Ann Fitts Ellington, Monty Fitts Adkins, and Claire Augusta Fitts. A native of Byhalia, MS, Nelle was the daughter of William D. Fitts and Mary Augusta Fitts of Byhalia. She graduated from Byhalia High School in 1922, from Mississippi State College for Women in 1927 and from The Cleveland Music Conservatory the following year. She began her teaching career in Cleveland, Ohio, and then taught in Vicksburg, Lake and Indianola, Mississippi, respectively. During World War II, she participated in the war effort by working at the Portland Shipyards in Portland, Oregon. She resumed her teaching careen in 1945 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she taught music and 5th grade for many years before retiring to Collierville, Tennessee, in 1985. She was an active member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Collierville, the ADK Sorority for Women Educators, The American Association of University Women, The Colonial Dames, The Daughters of the American Revolution, the Chattanooga Music Society and the Byhalia Garden Club.
