Agnes “Auny” Elaine Burkley, 95, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 16, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on March 27, 1929, to Edward Peter and Agnes Elaine Burrous in Atlanta, GA.
Agnes was a proud graduate of the University of Mississippi, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. A member of Chi Omega sorority and the Daughters of the American Revolution, she was a woman of great intellect and grace. After college, Agnes began her teaching career, specializing in remedial reading, but soon made the loving decision to dedicate herself fully to her family. She was a devoted wife and mother, known for her nurturing spirit and boundless love.
A gifted singer and pianist, Agnes brought joy to many through her music, sharing her talent at various churches throughout her life. She had a deep and abiding faith in the Lord and was passionate about sharing her testimony. One of her greatest callings was serving in prison ministries, a mission that was initially started by her husband and that she continued with unwavering dedication after his passing.
Agnes was a true extrovert who found joy in being around people. Her warm personality and infectious smile made everyone she met feel special. She had an extraordinary gift for making others feel welcome and loved, and she cherished the relationships she built throughout her life.
Her greatest passion, however, was her garden. Agnes had a green thumb and a special love for growing flowers. Her garden was not just a place of beauty but a reflection of her nurturing spirit—a space where she found peace and joy in the simple act of cultivating life.
Agnes was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Robert Burkley, Sr., her son, Charles Robert Burkley, Jr., her parents, Edward Peter and Agnes Elaine Burrous; her brother, Edward Peter Burrous; her sister, Georgia Anne Guillot; and her son in law, Stewart Cleveland.
