Jonathan R Hill

Jon Hill passed away at the age of 69 on January 21st after a two-year battle with cancer. He was a modern homesteader: growing vegetables, cutting firewood, picking apples from the orchard, fiddleheading, tapping maple trees, and filling the freezer with venison and fish. He was the ultimate outdoorsman, always leading family and friends on adventures throughout the state of Maine. Whether it was canoeing the Penobscot, camping on Chesuncook, ice fishing in the Allagash, fly fishing on the West Branch, trolling on Dobsis, hunting Main Stream or simply riding back roads looking for partridge or brookies, everyone came away with an epic story to tell.

Jon was a creative thinker, as seen in every camp, dock, dogsled, treehouse, or tool he ever built. He was also a phenomenal teacher, explaining everything from tree identification to the latest in deep space exploration in ways that were simple and fun. Most of all, Jon was deeply loyal to his family and friends. Unwavering and devoted husband of 43 years, loving father and grandfather, and dependable friend. He strongly supported those around him: lugging rocks, driftwood and birchbark to assist his wife’s art work, attending children and grandchildren’s sporting events, or helping a friend with a project. He will always be remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor, and spontaneity that kept everyone laughing. Jon started working as Boiler Engineer and Millwright in Costigan and West Enfield and spent the last twenty years as a Lab Technician at the Advanced Structures and Composites Center at the University of Maine.

He is survived by his wife, Judith Hill, and his three children: Tucker (Emily) Hill and their children Halle and Graham, Bailey (Zach) Means and their children Wyatt and Evie, and Sam (Kimberly) Hill and their children Adelyn and Isabelle. Jon is also survived by his four siblings: Jill Hill, Marty Molden, Carol McCarthy, and David Hill.

Calling hours for Jon will be held at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St, Old Town on Friday, February 2, 2024 from 4 to 7PM, with a brief memorial service at 6pm.
