Milford - Gary Arthur Johnston, 67, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2017, at an Orono healthcare facility after a brief battle with cancer. He was born on January 16, 1950, the son of Arthur and Louise (Seymour) Johnston of Milford.
Upon graduating from Old Town High School, Gary married Deborah (Gaudet) Johnston, to whom he was married for 32 years and with whom he raised two children. He worked for Maine Central Railroad for 15 years and Champion International in Costigan thereafter. Gary often reflected on his time spent working on the railroad and always had a story to tell.
Family meant a great deal to Gary. His most treasured memories involved time spent camping with his family in Lamoine State Park and Whispering Pines Campground in Orland. Gary was one who put the needs of his family before his own and never hesitated to share how extremely proud he was of his son and daughter, both of whom served on multiple deployments with the Maine Army National Guard. Throughout his life, Gary found great pleasure in simple activities like hunting, camping, driving his '68 Jeep Kyser, and taking day trips to coastal regions of the state while stopping at antique shops along the way.
He is survived by his two children, Troy Johnston and his wife, Jessica of Bradley, Amy Cartmell and her husband, Peter, of Newburgh; two granddaughters, Kayleigh and Mikayla of Bradley; two brothers, Glenn Johnston of Milford and Craig Johnston of Old Town; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Gary was predeceased by both of his parents.
A private burial will take place at Milford Cemetery in the spring.
