Clyde Campbell

OLD TOWN - Clyde W. Campbell, 97, husband of the late Lyle Campbell, died June 21, 2014 at an Orono health care facility, surrounded by family. He was born Oct. 12, 1916, in Old Town, the only son of George and Maude (Duplissis) Campbell. He was a 1938 graduate of Old Town High School where he participated in baseball, football, basketball, and hockey. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed following Maine hockey where he and Lyle were season ticket holders since the Alfond Arena was built and followed the team on many road trips include several frozen fours. He was also a life long fan of the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, and Notre Dame football. He was an active member of the Old Town community and was a life member of the Masons, Elks, Old Town United Methodist Church. He was employed at Penobscot Fiber Co as a chemical lab technician, produce manager at Sampson's Red and White, and retired from Sherwood Wood Products. Following retirement, he and his wife took trips to Bahamas and Hawaii, and enjoyed many bus tours to other states. With love of theater and big band music they traveled many summers to Ogunquit and Portsmouth. At age 95, he traveled with two of his children to Scotland for a once of a lifetime visit. He is survived by four children: Barbara Hume and her husband, Andrew of Veazie, Jane Brann and husband, Joe of Enfield, Bruce Campbell of Orland, and Jim Campbell and his wife, Betty of Milford; ten grandchildren: Mark Hume and his wife, Lisa, Eric Hume and his wife, Christine, Scott Hume and his wife, Ylva, Jon Hume, Jennifer Ireland and her husband, Keven, Julie Ireland and her husband, Sean, Amy Campbell and her husband, Jason Merriman, Justin Climo, Hilary Campbell, and Taylor Campbell, 13 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews; special friend and caregiver, Irene Thomas, and two special cats, Capt Morgan and Bacardi. He was predeceased by his wife of 73 years, Lyle M. Campbell on Aug 21, 2013; six sisters, Eleanor Libby, Vera Wing, Bunny Sherwood, Donna Phair, Pauline McDaniel, and Hazel Foster; favorite uncle and aunt, William and Addie Campbell. Many thanks to several caregivers who helped keep him at home until the last 10 days, and the staff at Orono Commons who provided care and comfort in his final days. A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Old Town United Methodist Church, Stillwater Ave, Old Town. Immediately following the memorial service all are invited to the Campbell home, 37 Sargent Drive, Old Town, for a celebration of life reception. Burial will be at Lawndale Cemetery at a later date.
