OLD TOWN—Clair E Shirley, 98, died peacefully July 29, 2022 at a Bangor hospital. He was born August 6, 1923 in Old Town the fifth and last child of G. William and Stella Mae (Morrell) Shirley.
He graduated from Old Town High School, Class of 1941 and attended the Maine School of Commerce now known as Husson University. He enlisted in the US Navy in February 1943 and served for three years. Following his return home, he attended the University of Maine graduating in 1951 with a degree in education. Instead, he chose a career as an executive for the Boy Scouts of America. He was employed for 10 years by the Katahdin Area council serving as a district executive and the director of finance. Shirley continued his scouting career by moving to the Monadnack council in Gardner, Massachusetts in 1961 where he served as scout executive. He took early retirement from scouting in 1975 and pursued a career in financial planning with I. D. S. ,retiring in 1988. He then furthered his education by attending Liberty University in Virginia where we earned his masters degree in 1992. He returned to Old Town in 1998 and begin his third career on the salesforce of prepaid legal services. He was a member of the Old Town Rotary Club, University of Maine Alumni Association, and member of the Board of Regents.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Mildred, daughter Betsy, as well as siblings Beulah (Shirley) White, Craig Shirley, Howard Shirley and Robert Shirley.
He is survived by step daughter Elaine and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service with military honors will be conducted 2PM Friday August 12, 2022 at the Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town.
