Edgar J. Gorman Jr.

Edgar J. Gorman, age 91, of Old Saybrook, CT, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2023. He was born in Thompsonville, CT on November 12, 1932, the son of the late Edgar and Louise Gorman. He was predeceased by his sister, Betty Gray. He is remembered and loved by his wife of 43 years, Anita Gorman; his children, Jill Bujnowski (Gray), Michael Gorman (Kathy), Robbi D’Allessandro, and Stephen Gorman (Rebecca); his grandchildren Tara Gorman-Lally, Stephanie Goodwin, Kaitlyn Gorman, Olivia D’Allessandro, John D’Allessandro, Tanner Gorman, Grace Gorman; his great grandchildren Grant, Morgan, Jack, and Kiera; his stepchildren Cindi Smith, Brian Kehlenbach (Pam), and Pamela Kehlenbach; and his four step grandchildren, Stefan Kehlenbach, Alyssa Kehlenbach, Austin Smith, and Sean Capalbo. Edgar graduated Enfield High School in 1950. Shortly after, he served as a Corporal in the United States Army from 1953 -1955 during the Korean War. He earned a B.S.degree from the American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1958, and a Master’s Degree from Central Connecticut State University in 1965. He received his Ph.D. in Education Administration in 1975 from the University of Connecticut. Afterwards, he developed a deep interest in the theoretical developments in psychotherapy introduced by Albert Ellis, and he became a practitioner of rational emotive behavior therapy. Much of his professional career was spent with the Windsor Locks School System, serving as a teacher, an elementary school principal, and ultimately as Assistant Superintendent and Director of Special Services and Curriculum. Upon retiring from the public school system in 1990, he worked as an administrator for the Newington Children’s Hospital School for special needs children in East Hartford. When Ed retired to his beloved home in Old Saybrook with Anita, he remained actively involved in the betterment of his community. He was instrumental in forming the District of Fenwood in support of the revitalization of Fenwood Beach, including the construction of a new stone pier in 1996. He worked tirelessly as the manager of the Westbrook Food Pantry for several years in selfless service to the needy along the Connecticut shoreline. His leisure activities and interests included his cherished membership with the Fenwick Golf Course and a fruitful hobby in woodcarving.

A Funeral Mass will be held for Edgar on February 2, 2024 at 11am at St. Mark's the Evangelist Church, located at 222 McVeagh Rd, Westbrook, CT 06498.
