Charles James Thompson, age 72, of Westbrook, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at home with his loving family by his side. Born on March 22, 1946, in Massachusetts, to the late Charles James Thompson, Sr. and Claire Austin Thompson. He was known as 'Bub" or Charlie Tuna". An avid sports fan he loved his Giants and Yankees, but enjoyed all sports. Entertained his family and friends with his humorous personality. Family was one of the most important values to him. He wished for them to always be happy and healthy. Being a part of his grandchildren's lives was a joy to him as well. Florida and Maine were his favorite places to travel to with his wife. Dancing was a pastime pleasure, in particular, the waltz. He worked as a supervisor at R.R. Donnelly's & Sons of Old Saybrook, Connecticut for 37 years. As a custodian, he worked 12 years for Whelen Engineering of Chester, Connecticut. Survived by his wife Sandra Lee (Houle) Thompson of 55 years. Daughter Deborah (Thompson) Torelli, son-in-law Tim Torelli of Southington, Connecticut. Daughter Donna (Thompson) Machold, son-in-law John Machold of Killingworth, Connecticut. His grandchildren Danielle Nicole Machold of Boston, Massachusetts, Krysta Victoria Torelli of Deerfield Beach, Florida, Tiffani Virginia Torelli of Southington, Connecticut, Zachary John Machold of Boston, Massachusetts, and Timothy Vicenzo Torelli of Southington, Connecticut. Sherry (Thompson) Scott, brother-in-law Gary Scott of Clinton, Connecticut. Nephew Gary Scott Jr. of White Haven, Pennsylvania. His sister Marion Austin of Groton, Connecticut and nephew Robert Chapman of New London, Connecticut. Charles also leaves behind wonderful grandnieces and grandnephews. Mother-in-law Doris LaValley of Florida, brother-in-laws Robert Houle of Massachusetts, Richard Houle of Florida, Oscar Houle of Alabama, John Houle of Florida, Thomas Houle of Vermont, Patrick Houle of Vermont, and Donald Houle of Vermont. Charles also leaves behind all the wonderful nieces, nephews, and grandnieces/nephews from his wife's family. Charles was predeceased by his sister Deborah (Thompson) Scott of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, brother Albert Thompson of Agawam, Massachusetts, a sister-in-law Patricia Rutty of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, nephew Toby Scott of Clinton, Connecticut, and niece Sally Chapman of Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Friends may greet the family on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. in the Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook. Inurnment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
