Bruce attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at age 17. He left RPI for two years in order to serve in the U.S. Navy. He then returned to RPI and graduated in 1951. Bruce had a long and successful career as a sales engineer, finally retiring when he was 80 years old.
Bruce was very active in the Old Saybrook community and served on many committees and contributed countless volunteer hours. He was a member of the Old Saybrook Exchange Club for many years, serving as president for several terms and engaged at the state and national levels.
Bruce was predeceased by his wife of almost 60 years Nancy Donegan Greenfield and his daughter Elizabeth Greenfield. He was also predeceased by his sister Margery Greenfield.
He is survived by his loving children Mark Greenfield (Karen Mooney), Jane Nierstedt (Edward), Mara Kelley (James) and his son-in-law Charles Hyman.
In addition to his children Bruce is survived by his grandchildren; Claire Hyman (Mark O’Neill), Catherine Hyman, Greg Hyman, Hannah Holland (Patrick), Julie Nierstedt (Matthew Bockhorst), Shannon Kelley, Graham Kelley (Caroline), and Audrey Jean-Guillaume (Evan). He is also survived by his brother Robert Greenfield of Baltimore, MD and his very dear friend Carol Kraner of Chester, CT.
His family will receive relatives and friends in the Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook, CT on Wednesday, November 9th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. A funeral service will be held on Thursday November 10th at 10 am directly at St. John’s Roman Catholic Church, 161 Main Street, Old Saybrook. Interment will be at Cypress Cemetery.
