He was born on March 3, 1945 in New London, son of the late James and Mary Lyons.
Thomas graduated from Saint Bernard High School in 1963 and then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He achieved the rank of sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1968.
On July 11, 1970, he married Maureen Hanley, who survives him. Thomas was employed by SNET and their successors for 44 years. In his retirement, he enjoyed gardening, feeding the wildlife in his backyard, completing home improvement projects, and watching This Old House. He was a member of the Pioneers of America, the Old Saybrook VFW, and the American Legion.
In addition to his wife, Thomas is survived by his daughter, Christine Nowak and her fiancee Christopher Going of Deep River, son Thomas Patrick Lyons and his wife Heather Fenn of Norwich, daughter Katharine DiDonna and husband Aaron of Ledyard; grandchildren Ashley and Meghan Nowak, Marina and Macie Morgan, and his best friend and grandson Mason Didonna; great grandchildren Ryder and Maddox Willoughby and Weston McCarty; cousins Cindy and Donnie Green.
In addition to his parents, Thomas was predeceased by his sister Katherine, aunt and uncle Barbara and Leslie Grimes, and cousin David Grimes.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, November 18th from 5 to 7 pm at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home , 13 Beckwith Lane Old Lyme. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Tuesday November 19th at 1:00 pm at Duck River Cemetery, Old Lyme. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Lyme Fire Company or Lyme Ambulance Association.
