Richard H. Miller, 80, of Old Lyme, CT and Vero Beach, Florida passed away peacefully on February 2nd with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Mary (Gilmore) Miller for 58 years. He was born on July 1, 1935 in Hartford, CT and was a graduate of Simsbury High School and the University of Connecticut. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army in Nuremberg, Germany. He was a mechanical engineer and worked for 40 years at Veeder Root in Hartford, CT. He was a long time resident of West Hartford and spent more than 50 summers at his beloved cottage at Point - O- Woods beach in South Lyme, CT. He coached youth baseball and basketball in West Hartford and in his spare time was a basketball official. As his family and friends knew very well, he loved to build and fix just about everything and he was always there to lend a hand to anyone in need of help. He had an adventurous spirit and was an avid sportsman who enjoyed skiing, road races, golfing and sailing in Long Island Sound.
He was a volunteer at Vero Beach Hospital in Vero Beach, Florida; a member of the juvenile review board in Indian River County, Florida; a former board member of the Lyme/ Old Lyme Historical Society; an active member of the Christ the King Men’s Club and a former Junior Achievement mentor.
In addition to his wife Mary, he leaves his children, Cynthia Miller Aird and her husband Stephen of Old Lyme and Rick (Jr.) Miller and his wife Jennifer of Hingham, MA. His grandchildren called him “M” and they became his greatest joy over the last twenty years. “M” never missed any games or activity of his grandchildren. It is with great sadness he says good-bye to Meredith and Graham Aird of Old Lyme, CT and Amanda and Richard Miller III of Hingham, MA. He is survived by his two sisters, Margaret (Peggy) Dana and Barbara Burns. He leaves a wonderful legacy of caring and giving for which he will be forever remembered. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in his memory on Saturday, February 13th at 11 AM at Christ the King Church in Old Lyme, CT.
