Hilma Larson Berggren, fondly known to all as “Mimi”, of Old Lyme, passed away peacefully at the age of 99 at a knitting group meeting on August 15, 2013 in Moodus, CT. On July 19, 1914, she was born the oldest of six children, to Albin and Anna Larson of Centerbrook. She was a graduate of Pratt High School in Essex. Mimi was the widow of Harold Berggren. Together they celebrated 52 years of marriage. Before retirement she was employed for many years at UARCO in Deep River. Mimi taught Sunday School for twenty five years.
Mimi was devoted to her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She loved working with her hands in knitting, needlepoint, sewing and doing her daily crossword puzzle. Playing cards with her great grandchildren was always a favorite. She enjoyed watching Nascar Racing. Mimi was famous for her amazing Christmas cookies and Potato Salad. She was active at the Lymes’ Senior Center where she spent many hours crafting with friends. She taught knitting to elementary students in Old Lyme and held a knitting group in her home.
Mimi is survived by her son David Berggren, her daughter Linda Marsh and husband Ted, all of Old Lyme; her brother Milton Larson of Deep River; her grandchildren David Berggren, Jr., Christina Underwood and husband Ben, Kimberly Cappello and husband Brian, and Geoffrey Marsh and wife Sophie; her great grandchildren Hayden Berggren, Katelyn and Joshua Cappello, Allison and Amanda Marsh, and Emily Underwood. She was predeceased by her siblings Edith Johnson, Betty Cerruti, Harold Larson and Margaret Hull.
A celebration of Mimi’s life will be held at the Lymes’ Senior Center on Tuesday, August 20 at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Lymes’ Senior Center, Old Lyme Visiting Nurses Association both at 26 Town Woods Rd. or the Old Lyme Ambulance Association at 22 Cross Lane.
