Barbara Jane (Motley) Colburn of Old Lyme passed away unexpectedly on October 3, 2023, surrounded by her three loving children, Beau, Missy and Katie and her husband, Bob. To those that knew her and loved her she was referred to affectionately as BJ, Mom, and Mimi. She was the heart of the Colburn family and her strength, generosity, and love will long be remembered by those who knew her.
Born July 11, 1948, BJ had a wonderful childhood growing up in Long Island with her parents William and Martha Motley and her four siblings, Billy, John, Tommy and Mary Jane. As an adult she moved to New York City where she had an impressive career working for Sports Illustrated as a photographer and later producer. Her passion for photography continued throughout her life and was passed down to her three children. Her days spent working in New York resulted in many lifelong friendships. She met her husband Bob while both working at Sports Illustrated, and they remained happily married for over 50 years. Bob and BJ moved to Connecticut after getting married and made a memorable and fulfilling life for themselves and their children in Old Lyme. Even though her roots were in New York her home was Connecticut. She even defied the New York odds, and became a die-hard Red Sox fan, watching the games night after night with her family.
BJ was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, friend, mother-in-law, aunt, Mom and Mimi. The biggest mark she leaves is in the lives of her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered as the best Mom Beau, Missy and Katie could ask for, and the best "Mimi" to Hawke, Hopper and Max. Her family felt her love every single day. The time she spent with her grandchildren gave her endless joy and fulfillment, as the kids always brought a huge smile to her face and made her happy beyond measure. More than anything, they loved spending time with Mimi; laughing, chatting, and playing.
BJ selflessly dedicated her life to making other people happy and taking care of her family. She welcomed her daughter-in-law Calleen and son- in-law Pete into the family with open arms. She enjoyed nothing more than having her family together and helping to create memories which they will forever cherish. There is a massive hole in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege to know her.
There will be a memorial service on October 21st at 2PM at the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme. Details for reception to follow.
The family asks to consider a donation to the Red Sox Foundation in BJ’s memory: https://www.redsoxfoundation.org/donate/
