Robert Douglas Brown Jr., “Bob,” a devoted husband, loving father, and grandfather, a respected member of his community, peacefully passed away on May 11, 2024, in Olathe, Kansas. He was born to Robert Sr. and Phyllis Brown on December 26, 1945, in Alton, Illinois.
Robert's journey began in Alton, Illinois, where he spent his early years before moving to Centralia, Missouri. He attended Alton Elementary School and later Sunnydale Elementary in Centralia. He graduated from Sunnydale Academy in Centralia in 1964.
In 1964, Robert began his career with Bell Systems, embarking on a journey that spanned over three decades. He loved and cherished his time at work and always spoke very highly of his work friends and colleagues. His commitment to his work was evident as he navigated through the transitions of Western Electric, AT&T Technologies, Lucent/Alcatel, and Nokia as an Installer, leaving an indelible mark on each phase of his professional life. His colleagues remember him as diligent, hard-working, and funny, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand.
In service to his country, Robert bravely served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1967, including a deployment as a medic in Vietnam. His selflessness and courage during his military service exemplified his dedication to duty and his fellow soldiers. At the end of his service in Vietnam, he was stationed at Westpoint Military Academy, where he remained steadfast in his commitment to his country.
Robert's life was enriched by his loving relationship with his wife, Jan, whom he cherished deeply. Their bond was a testament to enduring love and mutual respect, a source of strength and comfort throughout their lives together. They were married for fifty-five years and raised two wonderful boys, bringing them joy for many years.
In his leisure time, Robert enjoyed life's simple pleasures, including spending time with his family, fishing, camping, auto mechanics, sporting events, and traveling. Bob is most remembered for his helpful and handy nature, his generosity and humor, and his love of animals, especially his little dog, Muggs, who passed away in February 2024.
Robert is survived by his devoted wife, Janice K. (Tomlinson) Brown; his son Aaron (Jennifer) Brown; and daughter-in-law Melissa Brown. Sisters: Sandra (Brown) Eubanks and Judith Brown. Sisters-in-law: Deana (Tomlinson) Gardner and Linda (Kane) Tomlinson, grandchildren Westin, Reagan, Garrett, Isabella, Braeden, and Kennadee Brown. Nephews: Bob (Jeannie) Gardner, Gene Gardner, Rick (Gloria) Gardner, Mike (Debbie) Gardner, Dennis (Candy) Gardner, and Sean (Charlie) Eubanks. Niece: Tina (T.R.) Esfeld and several great and great-great nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Sr. and Phyllis Brown, his oldest son, Robert Douglas Brown III (Doug), his mother-in-law May (Tomlinson) Bartlett, and his brothers-in-law Larry Eubanks and Bruce Tomlinson.
A memorial service to celebrate Bob’s life will be held on June 1, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at the New Haven Seventh Day Adventist Church, 8714 Antioch Road, Overland Park, 66212. Bob will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his unwavering commitment to his family, country, and community. May he rest in peace, knowing that his legacy of love and service will forever be remembered.
