He and his twin brother Richard were adopted by N.D. and Emma Woods of Oklahoma City as infants. Robert graduated from Northeast High School in 1962. He then joined the U.S. Marine Corps Serving in the Marine Corps Reserve in the infantry and Artillery divisions for 6 yrs., until he received an honorable discharge. He attended the University of Central Oklahoma for one year. In 1965, he married the love of his life Carol Updike. He and “his bride” were happily married for 50 years, and had three beautiful children. Robert loved to travel, and he especially loved Quebec and Victoria Canada. Robert loved being outside, and took great care of his yard and his Koi pond. He had a love of animals, but especially for his cat Noah.
Robert worked as an avionics technician at Aero Commander in Bethany, OK before beginning his career with the Oklahoma City Police Department. He proudly served with OCPD for 29 years. During his time in law enforcement Robert was a patrol officer, a police detective, where he was promoted to sergeant, and then as a Lieutenant where he served as the jail supervisor. He eventually retired as the lieutenant over the sex crimes and burglary units.
Throughout his career, Robert was a highly respected leader with excellent communication skills. While in the Detective Bureau, he received multiple letters of achievement from the OCPD as well as 17 letters of commendation and 30 letters of civilian appreciation. During his tenure as an investigator, his reputation was such that he was assigned several high profile cases. ALL of these cases were solved and resolved by him. He was well known for his quality, thoroughness, and his absolute determination to catch the perpetrators of the cases that were assigned to him. His tenacity made him one of the premier investigators of the OCPD.
Robert always made everyone laugh. He was kind, caring, admired and well respected by peers and family. He was hard working, honorable and loyal. He was a loving and involved father and a loving devoted husband to his wife Carol.
Robert was a member of Crossings Community Church. He loved the Lord and openly shared his faith with others. There was always a Bible on his desk at
work. He had a passion for aviation and his love of airplanes led him to earn his private pilot’s license. More than anything he loved his family. They were his greatest love and joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents N.D. and Emma Woods, his twin brother Richard, his sisters Margaret Denman and Dorothy Willkomn and brother Donald Woods. Robert is survived by his wife Carol, sons Todd Woods and wife Sandy, Travis Woods and wife Kimberly, daughter Tiffany Dooley and husband Cary, eight grandchildren Chelsea, Matthew, Grant, Allison, Ryan, Avery, Brett, Braden and one great grandchild Aaron.
