On a windy day in March in the Maple Spring Community of Idabel, Oklahoma a bundle of joy was born to Augusta Sr. and Jessie Lee Johnson. They named him Robert Lee and he was the sixth of nine children.
He began his education in the Maple Spring and Richland communities. At the age of nine, his family moved to Idabel, Oklahoma. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1964. While attending BTW, Robert excelled in sports and academics. He was a Point Guard on the basketball team, THE starting Quarterback and Safety on a conference championship team. He also lettered all four years in basketball and football. He also served as President of the HCC Club (Hearts Christian Club).
He was a lover of sports as well as, a BIG fan of Oklahoma Sooner football. He was an avid reader of the Daily Newspaper (from front to back!), and he made sure to stay updated on the latest political issues. He loved cracking jokes and playing dominoes at ANY function. He loved to support his children and grandchildren in all their extracurricular activities. In his early years, he took pride in landscaping his yard, keeping his vehicles in tip-top shape, and those WHITE WALLS spotless!
He attended Tyler College and Central State University, but graduated from Elkin School of Broadcasting. He was employed with the City of Oklahoma City for eighteen years before retiring.
At the age of twenty-three, he gave his life to Christ and united with True Vine Independent Baptist Church. He served faithfully as a Sunday School teacher, Superintendent of Sunday School, Vacation Bible School Principal, assistant basketball Coach for True Vine Christian School, and the True Vine Church Team. He was on the Witnessing Team, the Lord Supper Committee, the Inward Reach Ministry, the Men's Ministry Choir, and the Finance Committee.
On April 26, 1969, he was united in holy matrimony to Betty Jewel Robinson. They were blessed with two children, DeLandria and Derrick. Years later, Robert was blessed with five grandchildren, whom he supported and loved dearly.
He departed this life on March 30th after celebrating his 77th birthday with a host of friends and family.
The loved ones who preceded him in death are his parents and brothers, Augusta Jr. and Eudell Johnson along with brothers-in-law, Eugene Carter and H. J. "Red" Harris.
Robert leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife, Betty "BJ" of fifty-four years; his daughter, DeLandria (Willie), son Derrick (Twyla): grandchildren: Peyton, Devyn (Lamar), Willie III, Derrick II, and Keanu; his siblings: Mattie Harris, Earl T (Opal), Ruby (James), twin sister Frances (Wallace), Richard (Esther), Theresa Carter, and sister-in-law, Ruby Dale Johnson.
