Phillip was born on September 8, 1947 in OKC to Ray and Alma (Goodson) Fields. He grew up in OKC and graduated with the Class of 1965 at Carl Albert High School. Shortly after graduation, Phil began working in civil service at Tinker Air Force Base. In 1968, he joined the US Navy and was stationed at Naval Base San Diego where he worked as a rescue helicopter crew chief aboard the USS Hornet whose mission was to rescue downed pilots in Vietnam. Following his discharge, Phil returned to OKC and resumed his position as an engine mechanic at TAFB. He also enrolled at Central State University in Edmond. In the early 1970s, he transitioned into an administrative role at Tinker. He became part of the Logistics Management Division where he worked on the F4 Phantom and conducted international negotiations on behalf of the US military.
In 1981, he married the love of his life, Janice (Jan) Drake. In 1983, the family relocated to their current residence in Choctaw, OK. Phil and Jan would share nearly four decades by each other’s side. Phil later accepted a position as an Air Logistics Instructor before retiring in 2003. Phil was a happy and ornery man who enjoyed listening to 60s rock n’ roll music and riding motorcycles with his friends. Together, they took many road trips and wore out the dirt bike trails at Draper Lake. He added a garage to their Choctaw home which was built to his specifications. He spent many hours in his new “office” and built several custom vans. He enjoyed collecting die-cast cars and he was a dog lover, his favorite being his family guard dog “Husky.”
Phil loved to smile and make others smile with his long list of corny (sometimes colorful) and witty jokes. He was a master storyteller and had plenty of great life stories to share with anyone who would listen. Phil was never happier than when he was surrounded by his loving family...and kicking ass at music trivia. Phil was the “go-to guru” for anything rock n’roll and/or hot rods! Above all, he was completely devoted to his wife, Jan who absolutely spoiled him rotten! Phil was a loving husband, a caring father, a proud grandfather and a loyal and trusted friend who will truly be missed by all who knew him.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Alma Fields. He is survived by Jan, his loving wife of 39 years; son, James Fields and wife, Shelley of Midwest City, OK; son, Londel J.
