Peggy Davis, our mom, grandma, great grandma, aunt, and friend to many, passed peacefully at her home in Oklahoma City on Sunday morning, June 11, 2023. Her beloved husband, Herbert “Dave” Davis predeceased her in October 1998.
She was born on August 22, 1933 in Evansville, IN, one of five daughters from the union of Fred Ellis and Mamie Rausch. Mom remained in Evansville through high school and was a proud alumnus of Reitz High. She was prouder still to be “washed in the blood” as an Evansville west-sider and finally an Okie by choice , since Dave’s assignment to TAFB in 1967, and his subsequent retirement in 1970 to Del City, OK.
Mom met and married dad in Evansville in 1952 and soon began a journey together throughout the USA and overseas during his USAF career. She was a loving mother and homemaker providing comfort and stability as we moved frequently. Mom was quite youthful and even younger at heart as she participated in many of our activities. Our friends enjoyed her wonderful sense of humor and her never ending curiosity for our lives; even as we established boundaries to curb her enthusiasm.
Mom began her career outside the home as a grocery clerk at GEX, joining her daughters Vickie and Beth, and became the office manager, which quickly hastened their exit. She also worked as an office manager at Scrivner Foods(Bestyet) and retired from May Department Stores(Target) in 1983.
Her and Dad enjoyed their retirement by traveling to visit friends and family in Indiana and elsewhere throughout the states. Mainly they devoted their time and attention to providing love and counsel while also spoiling their grandchildren. They succeeded immeasurably. It was mom said, the happiest time of her life. Like any family, much joy and laughter, but seasoned with tears and reflection as well as dad and other family passed.
Mom was a member of Putnam City Baptist Church and enjoyed volunteering in the kitchen. Her love for her children and grandchildren never wavered. She retained her lifelong sense of humor and “true grit.” She was tough. Although she could occasionally “bite” a little too hard, the marks left behind were to remind you of her devotion to your happiness. We will miss her and our hearts are broken, yet filled with the joy of her sweet release. We will love you forever.
Peggy was also predeceased by her parents, sisters Edith Beem, Helen Knopfmeier, Betty Rapp, and Lorzella Hardy.
She is survived by: daughters Vickie (Don) Treece, Oklahoma City, and Beth Manning, Edmond, OK.
A son Robert (Shirley) Davis, St. Louis, MO. Grandchildren Todd ( Shawna) Rhines, Oklahoma City, Jason (Jennifer) Rhines, Newcastle, OK, Justin (Lindsay) Manning, Edmond, OK, Jenna (Josh) Harlow, Oklahoma City, Kevin Davis, St.Louis, MO and Kate (Jeff) Pinkley, High Ridge, MO. She is also survived by great grandchildren Austin and Logan Rhines, Taylor and Caleb Rhines, Madeline, Lucy, and Andrew Manning, Walker Harlow, Makenzie Davis-Rohrbach and Mia Pinkley. Also nieces Paulette Happe, Leatha Lannert, and Joy Knopfmeier, all of Indiana. To honor mom’s final request, her services will be for family only.
