LaVerne June Smith, 90, died June 1, 2017, in Oklahoma City. LaVerne was born on June 6, 1926, in Oklahoma City to Erwin and Lula Hanewinckel. She grew up in Oklahoma City and was graduated from Classen High School. LaVerne attended the University of Oklahoma where she met her future husband, Chester C. Smith, Jr.
Chet and LaVerne were married on December 21, 1946, and lived in Pennsylvania and Florida while Chet was on active duty as an officer in the U.S. Navy. They settled in Oklahoma City where they raised their children, Michael E. Smith, Stewart C. Smith, and Lee Ann Smith Nordin.
LaVerne was the ultimate mother and wife. Her gift was service to others, which was reflected in her roles as Brownie leader, Cub Scout den mother, Theta Moms Club president, Mobile Meals volunteer at Church of the Savior, PEO member, and Pink Lady at Presbyterian Hospital for more than 40 years (where she was once named volunteer of the year).
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Michael and Barbara Smith, Stewart and Karen Smith, and Lee Ann and Michael Nordin, her grandchildren, Lindsay Biswell, Meredith Smith, Whitney Smith, Nick Smith, Bridget Roberts, Zach Smith, Lauren Hischke, Emily Smith, Samuel Smith, Elizabeth Nordin, and Ann Nordin, and 11 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on June 9, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at Church of the Savior, 5600 N.W. 56th St., Warr Acres, Oklahoma. Memorial donations may be made to Church of the Savior for Mobile Meals.
