Larry W. Fitch was born August 12, 1943 in Casa Grande, AZ to Clarence and Helen (Hatchett) Fitch. He grew up on a cotton farm near Stanfield, AZ. Larry is survived by his wife of 50 years, Linda Fitch, two sons, David Fitch (Carol) of Perrysburg, OH and Brent Fitch (Anita) of Vicenza, Italy. He and Linda have six grandchildren: Andrew, Anthony, Sara and Maya Fitch, Amanda Zacharias (Andy) and Derrick Durivage (Erica). Other survivors include Larry’s sister, Dana Dumont (Walter), and Mother-in-Law Sybil Wilson as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and many treasured friends.
He married his high school sweetheart, Linda, May 31, 1965. After high school, he attended Grand Canyon College in Phoenix, AZ and then transferred to Oklahoma Baptist University, graduating in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts. He completed a Bachelor of Laws at LaSalle University in 1972.
Larry was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Stanfield, AZ at age six and remained active in churches for his entire life. He taught Sunday School in various churches for over 50 years and was ordained as a deacon at First Baptist Church of Oklahoma City. In this capacity, he served on numerous committees over a period of 27 years including Chair of Deacons, Personnel, and Finance. He and Linda are active supporters of FBC’s charitable missions, including Good Shepherd Free Medical and Dental Clinic, Care for OKC food pantry and clothing closet, and various mission groups.
Larry was employed by General Adjustment Bureau from 1965 – 1968. He joined United States Fidelity & Guaranty Company (later St. Paul Insurance Company and then The Travelers) in 1968 and retired 30 years later in 1998. During those years, he served as Claims Manager, Agency & Development Manager, Vice President & Branch Manager in Albuquerque, NM, Baltimore, MD, Toledo, OH, and Oklahoma City, OK. He retired as Regional Vice President/Western Division in Denver, CO. From 2006 until his death, Larry was General Manager of the OK Property & Casualty Insurance Guaranty Fund.
Larry was an avid OU football fan. He loved driving ‘his girls’ (Linda, Trisha and Jeanie) to OU games in his big, red F-150. Larry’s greatest joy in life was spending time with his family and friends. His gentle, loving and kind nature was encountered by everyone who met him and he was always willing to devote his time and assistance to anyone in need. His optimism, sense of humor, and compassion towards others will be greatly missed.
Private interment will be conducted at Newcastle Memorial Gardens by Reverend Tom Ogburn. A Celebration of Larry’s life will be held at First Baptist Church of Oklahoma City, 1201 North Robinson Street, Oklahoma City, OK at 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 27, 2015 with reception and visitation to follow.
The family has suggested charitable donations to honor Larry in lieu of flowers. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice or to one of the following charities which were favored by Larry: The PKD Foundation for Polycystic Kidney Disease; Wounded Warrior Project; First Baptist Church of Oklahoma City.
