Born in Flushing, New York in 1946, John grew up with his older brother Frank, and his younger sister Margaret in Summit, New Jersey and later in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
While attending Ripon College in Wisconsin, he met his future wife, Susan Dorothy Robinson, and after serving as a Captain in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, they married in 1970. They welcomed their sons, Nick and Peter, in 1972 and 1975, respectively.
John attained his Juris Doctor from the University of Oklahoma, and began his 40-year career as an attorney with the law firm of McAfee and Taft, with 5 years as Managing Director. He specialized in civil litigation, and advocated for children of parents in dispute through his work with Oklahoma Lawyers for Families and Children. John was inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers, as well as being included in The Best Lawyers in America, Chambers USA’s Guide to America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, and the Legal Media Group’s Guide to the Leading US Litigation Lawyers.
The family attended St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church where John was a Deacon, an Elder, and a Sunday School teacher.
He was a voracious reader and avid golfer, and loved traveling with family and friends.
John lost Susan to cancer in 2016. He married Cynthia Cortright in 2019 and they traveled, hosted gatherings, and loved each other until his passing.
John is survived by his wife Cynthia, his sons Nick and Peter, his grandchildren Bryon and Davis, his sister and brother Margaret and Frank, and his nephews and niece, Marc Ryan, Erik, and Keli.
