Jimmy G. Johnson Sr., 87, of Oklahoma City, OK passed from this life on January 22, 2019 with his family at his side. Services have been entrusted to the care of Advantage Funeral Service at 7720 S. Penn in OKC. A celebration will be held on Saturday at 10am at the funeral home. Public visitation will take place on Friday from 4-8pm.
Jimmy was born on February 2, 1931 to Oscar Lee Johnson and Jewel (Wright) Johnson. The Johnson family was in the process of moving from TX to AR by horse-drawn covered wagon when Jimmy arrived in Wichita Falls, TX. He was raised in AR and in 1948 he married Irene May McGlasson. Jimmy and Irene had six children together and settled in Bethel Acres, OK.
He joined the National Guard to serve his country but was later found to be too young to serve. Jimmy spent the majority of his life employed as an Iron Worker. He was a member of the local 48 union who always kept him busy, often traveling all over the country to provide for his family.
An unforeseen injury ended his days as an iron worker and Jimmy retired in the late 1970’s. He was a proud member of the Chickamauga Cherokee Tribe and also proudly served his community as a volunteer firefighter in Walden, AR. Jimmy was a character and enjoyed teasing folks to put a smile on their faces. He was an honest man who always kept his word.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Irene, a son Jimmy Johnson Jr, a son Ricky Johnson, grandson Oscar Johnson, and four sisters: Bessie Chitwood, Lessie Ingels, Dessie Adams and Mattie Goins.
He is survived by his children: Oscar Johnson and wife Cheryl, Sandy Johnson, Gilbert Johnson and wife Carolyn, David Johnson and wife Jo, Kenneth Johnson and wife Mary, and Kathy Steele and husband Eddie. He was also survived by 10 grandkids, 19 great grandkids, and a host of other beloved family and friends.
