Georgina Tovar Avila fondly known as “Gigi” is the eldest of eight children, born on April 23,1945, in Mexico City, Mexico. She moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1979, following her sister Cristina.
She was a single mother in a new country trying to provide a better life for her daughter. With a physical disability that would cripple others, she faced life adversities with a fiery spirit and quick wit. Her greatest treasure was her daughter whom she raised, molded and poured into invaluable guidance.
She established her 25-year business/career as a tailor in downtown OKC, living her American Dream.
Throughout Gigi’s life she loved, cultivated and nurtured long-time relationships with her community, she loved helping and serving others. But also possessed a strong and stern stance when she felt the situation warranted.
Gigi was known for her advice, good sense of humor, charming character and above all a tireless fighter with a positive attitude to life’s challenges. Those that know her well knew how much she loved frogs, a good fútbol and boxing match.
She was a faithful daughter of God always up to offer a beautiful prayer, she was loved, admired and will be deeply missed.
She lived a full life.
She peacefully passed away to be with her Lord and Savior at 79 years on April 29,2024 at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma surrounded by loved ones.
This matriarch leaves behind her cherished best friend, confidant and accomplice, her daughter Alma Tovar Luna and her beloved grandchildren Alexis Luna, Erica Luna, Adam Luna and Estrella Luna.
Gigi was preceded in death by her parents (Irma “Chatita” Tovar Servín & Angel Tovar Hernandez) and sister (Patricia Tovar Ruiz)
Survivors include her sisters Cristina Tovar Alvarez, Gloria Tovar Ávalos, Mercedes Tovar Ponce de Leon, Carolina Tovar Obregón, Irma Tovar Keltch and brother Jorge Tovar Servín, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Viewing at Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper will be on Thursday, May 9th, 2024, from 8am-8pm. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, May 10th at St. Joseph’s Old Cathedral with interment to follow in Rose Hill Burial Park.
