We are very sad to hear about Ben's passing.  We had a long relationship with him only over the phone.  He called us quite a bit and shared many of our cakes with his friends and family.   
We will miss his kind words and thoughtfulness. 

My Grandma's Coffee Cake of New England Family

Just saw this obit today (Monday 10 Oct) on Benjamin Shanker.  I did not know Mr. Shanker, but his name made me think of my good friend and schoolmate since Nichols Hills Elementary, John Marshall and Eisenhower Jr. High, Jay Shanker.  From reading the condolences, Mr. Shanker had a son named Jay, so I am going to deduce it is my friend Jay.  The Shanker children are blessed to have had their father for these many years.  I lost my father Dick Robins 20 years ago, and tomorrow would have been his 100th birthday.  I live just a few blocks from the cemetery.  I wish I had known sooner.  I would have loved to have seen Jay after all these years.  God bless you Jay, and may he comfort you and your family in this time of sorrow.

It is with great reverence for the life of Benjamin Shanker that I offer my condolences to his family, and his son Mark who I am privileged to call my dear friend.  May Ben rest in peace knowing he lived an impacting and meaningful life…

To talk about Ben I must include Shirley. In 1977 when I was in culinary school, one day we made challah. I made an extra and took it to them. They always were exceedingly kind and interested in anything I was doing, and made me feel important, like family. I saw them a dozen times or more at various stores or caterings and it was always the same treatment. I know they taught the same values to Sandra and Thom and the rest of the family, Mark and Jay. My sincere prayers for condolence and peace to you all. Shalom.

My sincere condolences to the family of Ben Shanker.  He was truly one of the kindest and most generous men I have ever known.  Having attended high school with Sandra and Thom (in different classes - didn't meet Jay and Mark till later on) I was blessed to be able to meet and get to know both him and Shirley.  They were always so welcoming and kind with such a calming and gentle presence.  Their support and kindness to me and my family will be remembered and appreciated always.
