Catherine Mathews-Hagey, wife of the late Frank Hagey, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, February 23rd, after a car accident. The next day would have been her 82nd birthday.
Cathy grew up in Brooklyn, NY. After graduating from Hunter College, she joined the Peace Corps in the late 1960’s serving in South Korea (K-IV group) where she met and married her husband during his service in the military.
On returning home, Cathy worked as a counselor at the Vietnam Veterans Outreach Center in Queens, NY where she and her husband operated combat veteran groups, crisis intervention and did some of the original research on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
In the 1980's they bought a farm in Edwards, NY where they remained active in helping local Vietnam veterans. Her last job was running a food pantry for the Church & Community Program in Canton, NY.
Volunteering was in Cathy’s soul, as was speaking out for those in need.
As per her wishes there will be no calling hours or funeral services. She is survived by her sister Christine Mathews of New York City.
