Funeral services for Bruce Benson Nichols, 72, of Ogdensburg will be held on Friday, December 12, 2014, at 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church in Ogdensburg with the Reverend Laurena Will and Pastor Thomas Nichols co-officiating. Burial will follow the service at Pine Hill Cemetery, Eel Weir Road.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014, from 2-4 PM & 6-8 PM at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home in Ogdensburg. Mr. Nichols passed away peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014, at the Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, VT, surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Nichols is survived by his wife Mary; three sons: Scot (Angela) Nichols of Ogdensburg, Kurt (Michele) Nichols of Forest Hills, NY, and Andrew Nichols of Astoria, NY; a daughter Carrie (Alexander) Crowe of Ogdensburg; two brothers: Benjamin Nichols of Newington, CT, and W. Clark “Nick” Nichols & Nancy Moroso of Madison, CT; four sisters: Koral (Lawrence) Murdoch of Columbia, MD, Lucy (Frank) Martin of Lancaster, VA, RoseMarie (Ronald) Meservey of Columbia, MD, and Susan (Daniel) Ulrich of Baltimore, MD; three grandchildren: J. Wyatt Nichols, Nathaniel Crowe and West Nichols; extended family members Jon and Carol Livingston and Patrick and Jean McGuire; several young men who he considered to be adopted sons; aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister-in-law Patricia Jennings Nichols.
Mr. Nichols was born on Aug 24, 1942, in Ogdensburg, NY, a son of the late Willard & Susan (Dewey) Nichols. He graduated from Heuvelton Central High School and Cornell University with a degree in animal husbandry. On July 10, 1971, he married Mary Livingston at the Galilee Methodist Church with the Reverends Allen Barnes and Clark E. Gilmour.
Mr. Nichols owned and operated Nichols’ Dairy and then the family farm for many years. He sold agricultural commodities and electricity in his later years. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, traveling, family gatherings, playing sports, riding horses and tending to his animals. He had a fondness for innovation and new technology. Those who knew him, would recognize his ready smile and will remember his warm hugs. Above all, he loved his family.
Throughout his life he was active in many organizations as past Deacon, Trustee and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church, former president of the Ogdensburg Rotary Club, member of the Heuvelton Central School Board and as a marching band chaperone. He was involved in the Farmers’ Co-Op, 4-H, Pine Hill Cemetery Association and participated in numerous other volunteer capacities. He was especially proud to serve in Mississippi with the Presbyterian Disaster Relief Assistance volunteers after Hurricane Katrina.
