Norma Gay Mounts was born October 30, 1936 in Lamesa, Texas to Blanton and Verna White Clearman. She passed away after a brief illness on December 16, 2015 surrounded by family and cloaked in love. She was 79 years old.
Norma grew up on a farm and was active in many organizations as a child. Her favorite things she liked to do was play basketball and sew. She won several awards for her sewing talents.
After high school, Norma moved to Midland, Texas and went to work for Shell Oil. While living in Midland, she met the love of her life George Mounts. They married on May 25, 1956. They have two children, Kimberly Graham and Mark Mounts.
Norma was an active member at Highland UMC and then later at St. Luke’s UMC Odessa. While at Highland, she was part of a group that started a new Sunday school class that is still active to this day. The ladies of this group continued to be life-long friends. They are affectionately known as the Steel Magnolias.
Norma felt a calling to help people understand their God given talents and to help them understand how to use them to serve their church. So, she and Gerry Mortimer helped to bring Discover God’s Call to West Texas.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents Blanton and Verna Clearman, her step mother Ella May, and the love of her life George Mounts. She is survived by her daughter Kimberly Graham and her husband Tony, her son Mark Mounts and his wife Pamela, six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
Kim and Mark would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses and staff that cared for Mom during her brief illness at both Medical Center ICU and the Continued Care Hospital at Midland Memorial. Each and every one of you made a difference in mother’s life. We have been truly humbled by the outpouring of love from family, friends, and a few people who were at the right place at the right time to pass on encouragement and condolences. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
A burial service will be held at December 19, 2015 at Sunset Memorial Gardens at 9:30am followed by a Celebration of Life at 10:30am at First United Methodist Church Odessa.
In Lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to one of the following: Samaritan Counseling Center of West Texas, United Way Midland, Permian Basin Rehabilitation Center, or First United Methodist Church Odessa.
