Leonard E. McCutcheon passed away early Monday morning June 25, 2018. He was preceded in death by his wife June Lois Stansell McCutcheon. He is survived by his four children, Cheryl Bradley, Ray McCutcheon, David McCutcheon and Mary Browning. He had 7 grandchildren, Chris Bagnall, Katie Holcomb, Michael McCutcheon, Cody McCutcheon, Jared Hudgins, Tyler Hudgins and Andrew Browning. He had 4 great grandchildren, Kinsley Hudgins, Julia Hudgins, Trent McCutcheon and Brock McCutcheon. Leonard is also survived by his sister Virginia Tingley and a brother Jimmy McCutcheon.
Leonard was born on May 5, 1930 in Carlsbad, NM. He graduated from Artesia High School in 1948. He was in the army for 2 years. After returning home from the army Leonard married June Lois Stansell on August 8, 1954. A year later in September they had their first of four children, Cheryl Lynn McCutcheon. Following her was Leonard Ray, David Tull, and finally the fourth Mary Lynn in 1966.
They lived in Artesia, NM for most of their young married years, eventually moving to Big Spring, TX in 1971. Leonard worked in the oil fields for Leonard Nichols Oil Company until it sold to Chevron whereupon he became a foreman.
Leonard retired from Chevron in 1976 and purchased a Texaco oil distributorship in Big Spring, TX. He ran it until it closed in 1992. While running the Texaco distributorship, June and Leonard opened a men's clothing store in Big Spring in 1984. All the while keeping an eye on their family ranch in Ruidoso, NM.
After closing both the clothing store and the distributorship, Leonard moved to Ruidoso where he spent most of the rest of his life. He will be remembered as the nice man that would sit and talk to anyone. It could be said that when he spoke to someone he was never speaking to a stranger. To him they were all friends in their own right.
Visitation will take place on Sunday, July 1, 2018 from 1pm-9pm CST at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Memorial services will be at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home on Monday, July 2, 2018 at 2pm CST. A graveside service will be held at South Park Cemetery in Roswell, NM on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at 2pm MT.
