Joe was born on January 12, 1939, in Pecos, Texas to David and Martina Lara Ortega. He married the love of his life Rosa Rodriguez Ortega, and they were happily married for 62 years.
Joe worked most of his life as a plant operator for Getty Oil/ Texaco. After retiring from the oil & gas industry, he worked for St. Mary's School as a custodian. Joe retired a second time, but continued to work part-time for Norma's Cafe until he could no longer work.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Carlos Ortega, Luis Ortega, David Ortega, Jr., Jesus Ortega and Henry Ortega.
Joe is survived by his wife; sons, Joe, Roman, Gabriel, Freddie Ortega; daughters, Yolanda Monroe, Sara (Gabriel) Chavez; sisters, Teresa Campos, Betty Rodriguez, Maria Elena Olivas; 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joe's family would like to thank the wonderful staff and residents at Deerings Nursing Home, the staff at Medical Center Hospital, as well as friends and family for all your support and care.
In Lieu of flowers, the family wishes you to consider a memorial donation to St. Mary's Catholic School in his memory.
A visitation for Joe will be held Wednesday, January 17, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home, 601 N Alleghaney Ave, Odessa, Texas 79761, with Rosary starting at 7:00 PM. A funeral mass will occur Thursday, January 18, 2024 at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 612 E 18th Street, Odessa, TX 79761.
Serving as pallbearers are Gabriel Joe Chavez, Roman Herrera Ortega, Luis Flores, Elijah Valenzuela, Dago Rodriguez and Jose Rodriguez II.
