She was born on April 27, 1932, to Suzie Mitchell Bailey and Dewitt Bailey in Broaddus, TX. She was 3rd of five daughters born to this union.
Janet married Wendell Gene Miller in Shreveport, LA, on February 19, 1952. Gene was in the U.S. Navy and she followed him to Shreveport, San Diego, Portsmouth, and New London. After Gene was honorably discharged they settled in Dallas, TX. In 1955, Gene began a new job with Smith Welding and they moved to Little Rock, AR. He then became the founder of NASCO Welding which moved him to St. Petersburg, FL, where they lived for a little over 20 years, raising daughters, Carol Dawn and Wendy Janet. In 1978, Gene moved the family to Odessa, TX, when he bought Basin Welding Supply.
While in Florida, she grew orchids and roses and served as PTA president, room mother, served the Maximo Moorings Women’s Club as President, where she hosted and volunteered in many capacities. She was the Children’s choir coordinator at First Baptist Church, St. Petersburg, taught the young married women’s Sunday school, and hosted Sunday lunch or dinner for every out-of-town guest pastor and speaker for that church family. When she moved to Odessa, she began serving in the church office at First Baptist Church, Odessa, as a volunteer in the financial office, where she served until Gene became ill. She also loved her membership in the Odessa Study Club where she served in many capacities.
Her beloved husband, Gene, passed away on May 7, 2003, after 51 years of faithful marriage, and on August 25, 2011, she lost her precious youngest daughter, Wendy Miller Younts. Janet is survived by her daughter, Carol Miller Harry and husband, Steve, and her son-in-law Daniel Younts. She also leaves five grandchildren Daniel Vinson Younts II, Bonnie Suzanne Younts, Christopher Bailey Younts, Timothy Steven Harry and wife, Ashley, and Barrett Miller Harry; three great-grandsons Westley Ezekiel Harry, Seth Ryan Harry, and Levi Wyatt Harry. She also leaves behind three sisters Kathleen Gillespie, Bonnie Hall, and Annabelle Bryant, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wants to especially thank Janet’s precious caregivers Lupita Reynosa, Juanita, Lupe, Yesenia, and Mary; Home Hospice and nurses Jessica and Shelly; Home Instead Senior Care; Adrianna, Bridget, Ramona, Maria, Joe, and Lisa, and all the other precious people who came to held her through this last battle with breast cancer and dementia.
Family visitation will be held at Frank Wilson Funeral Directors from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Monday, June 1, 2015.
Graveside services will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, June 2, 2015, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Rev. Curtis Brewer officiating.
Memorial contributions may be given in Janet’s memory to the First Baptist Church Music Ministry.
