Louise Johnson Werfel, age 90, of Lakewood, NJ peacefully passed away the morning of July 21st. She was born October 12, 1933 in Bayonne, NJ.
As a child, Louise (known affectionately to her family as Ishie) attended the Bergen School in Jersey City, NJ. She went on to obtain her undergraduate degree at Centenary College followed by her graduate degree in interior Design at Parson School of Design in New York City. Louise was a talented interior designer, working in New York with some of the top designers of the time, including Dora Brahms and Robert Greer.
On a beach in Loch Arbour, New Jersey Louise met Irwin Werfel who would become the love of her life. He told her that day that he would marry her. She told him he was crazy, but they did marry and had a storybook marriage of 45 years. Louise was a friend to many, with her vibrant and positive personality. Together, she and Irwin hosted many social gatherings for friends and family. Whether the theme was a Hawaiian luau or her children's birthday parties, complete with clowns, magicians, or animal rides, her parties were always memorable.
After her first son Neil was born Louise continued her work until her second son Andrew came along, then stepped back from her career to devote herself entirely to her family. Raising a family in West Caldwell she was very active in her son's education and daily lives. She loved the beach and spent summers on Long Beach Island at the family beach house, which was a present from Irwin for her 40th birthday. Spending days on the beach, boating and water skiing with her family, and exploring the island’s shops and art galleries was her idea of a fulfilling summer. Eventually they retired from West Caldwell to Lakewood, NJ.
Louise was predeceased by her husband Irwin Lewis Werfel and her brothers John and Edwin Johnson. She is survived by her son Neil Werfel (Evan Bush) of Athens, GA, son Andrew Werfel (Donna Werfel), and granddaughter Lauren Werfel of Parsippany, NJ.
Louise was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend who will be missed. A private family interment was held at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, NJ. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Louise’s memory to the charity of one’s choice.
