Lois Barr Barrett, age 92, passed away on December 9, 2024. She was born on May 26, 1932, in Wilmington, DE, then moved to Asbury Park where she was raised and later graduated from Asbury Park High School. Lois attended Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where she met the love of her life, Ronald Barrett, who predeceased her.
Lois is survived by her daughters, Patti Barrett, Laurie Dalton (Dave), and Beth Barrett (Deborah Cavalier); her brother, Jack Barr, and her grandchildren, Morgan Stein, Gabrielle Brooks, Kyle Dalton, and Jami Dalton. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Kayden, Connor, Treyce, and Kaisen. She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Bertha Barr.
A lifelong member of Temple Beth El (now Congregation Torah El), Lois served in numerous leadership roles, including as President of the Sisterhood and as the temple's first female president. She also served on the Board of the Central New Jersey Branch of the National Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, the Women’s Division of the Monmouth County Jewish Federation, and the Asbury Park Chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women.
Lois was deeply committed to her community. She formed the first senior citizens’ club for residents of Comstock Court in Asbury Park and served on the boards of PTAs for Wanamassa, Oakhurst, and Dow Avenue Schools. She was an active member of the Eleanor Banker Chapter of Mizrachi and the SEARCH Auxiliary for Autistic Children.
In addition to her volunteer work, Lois shared her talents as a columnist for the Asbury Park Press, writing a social column that connected readers across the community.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 12th 11:00 at Bloomfield Cooper Jewish Chapel in Ocean, NJ followed by interment at Temple Beth El Cemetery, Rt 33, Neptune, NJ.
