Lawrence Richmond, 82, of Shrewsbury, New Jersey passed away August 24, 2024 at home. He was born in Patterson, New Jersey to the late Irving and Adeline (née Bassin) Richmond. He moved to Red Bank at age 5, attending the Red Bank Public School System and often helping his parents and beloved uncle and aunt, Sidney and Rose (née Bassin) Miles, at the family business, Heritage Liquors in Red Bank. Larry grew up with a large extended family, including his beloved late grandmother Nella (née Levitan) Bassin, sister Abbe Deitch (Steven Deitch), and cousins Frani Rosen (Michael Rosen) and Shari Goldfarb (Richard Goldfarb). His family were founding members of Congregation B’nai Israel.
Larry received a B.A. from Monmouth College and an M.A. from Temple University. While at Temple, Larry met his wife of 58 years, Sharon (née Weiss) Richmond. They met on Valentine’s Day of 1964 and soon knew they would spend their lives together. Larry and Sharon were married in Wynnewood, PA in May, 1966.
Larry proudly taught Social Studies for 38 years in the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School System at Pine Brook Junior High School and then at Manalapan-Englishtown Middle School. For many years, he coached basketball, later adding soccer and track, and he ran the Manalapan Township Summer Recreation program. Mr. Richmond was a beloved teacher, coach, and mentor to the thousands of children who passed through his classroom door.
Larry and Sharon settled in Shrewsbury and had three daughters, Nancy Hipschman, Sandra Richmond, and Jennifer Richmond-Bryant. They welcomed sons-in-law Larry Hipschman, Chris Beemer, and Bill Bryant in the late 1990s/early 2000s. His greatest source of pride was his five grandchildren, Sara Hipschman, Isaac Bryant, Daniel Hipschman, Hannah Beemer, and Henry Hipschman. Larry loved sharing in their b’nai mitzvot, graduations, and other mitzvot throughout the years. He enjoyed celebrating many holidays and happy times and was a good friend to many in his community.
