Cindy M. Sherman

It's with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Cindy Sherman, 69, who lost her hard-fought battle with colon cancer on December 27, 2024, in Red Bank, NJ. Born and raised in Fair Haven, Cindy was a lifelong NJ resident who previously lived in Montclair and retired to Long Branch where the shore was calling her home.  Cindy is a graduate of Boston College and earned her master’s degree in counseling at Montclair State. She touched countless lives with her kindness, dedication, and passion for helping others.

Cindy served as a high school guidance and crisis counselor at Bloomfield High School, where she was deeply loved by both students and colleagues. Her career was marked by her unwavering commitment to inclusion, as seen through her founding of the GLOW group (Gay Lesbian Or Whatever), ensuring all students had a safe and welcoming community. Beyond her schoolwork, Cindy maintained a private therapy practice and provided compassionate counseling care to women battling cancer through her work at Mary’s Place by the Sea.

An incredible athlete, Cindy was a professional basketball player for the Jersey Gems and excelled in tennis, pickleball, bocce ball and water aerobics. Together with her doubles and life partner, Sheryl Goldstein, Cindy achieved a remarkable milestone by competing in the USTA National Championships in Indian Wells.

Cindy was predeceased by her parents, Barbara Sherman Gorlin and Howard Sherman. She is survived by her devoted wife of 31 years, Sheryl Goldstein, her cherished daughter Sarah-Jaana Nodell Sanchez and her husband Michael, her loving siblings Lisa Sherman Previte and her husband Franke, and Gregg Sherman and his wife Jen. Cindy will also be deeply missed by her beloved Aunt Beverly Richelson, her Aunt Sue and Uncle Gus Davis, her brothers-in-law Gary Goldstein (Jill), Brian Goldstein (Marcia), and Dr. Bruce Goldstein (Jill), her beloved Havapoo, Pancho, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and those she mentored throughout her life.

Funeral services will be held at 11am on Sunday, January 5th at Bloomfield Cooper Jewish Chapels, 2130 Highway 35, Ocean, NJ. Friends and family are invited to gather to celebrate Cindy’s life starting at 10:15 am. Following the service, a meal will be shared in the Bloomfield Cooper reception room.

Cindy’s life was defined by her generosity, her vibrant spirit, and her ability to bring people together. She leaves behind a legacy of love, inclusion, and strength that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
